The Crown files its response to Henry Koia's application for urgent hearing inquiry into the Wai 3465 Poho-o-te-rangi lands (Koia) claim. 6 May 2025: Judge Reeves accepts the Wai 3465 claim
Judge Reeves directs the Registrar of the Waitangi Tribunal to register the Wai 3465 Poho-o-te-rangi lands (Koia) claim. To read a copy of Judge Reeves' directions click here.
5 May 2025: Henry Koia submits claim to the Waitangi Tribunal
Henry Koia, Chairperson of the Mo Koia Land Trust submits the Poho-o-te-rangi lands claim to the Waitangi Tribunal claiming that the New Zealand colonial government's failure or refusal to recognise the supreme authority of the Poho-o-te-rangi Sovereign Land Council is a breach of te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840. Henry seeks a finding from the Waitangi Tribunal that his claim is well founded and a Waitangi Tribunal recommendation to the Crown that the Crown without delay (1) recognises the legitimacy of the Poho-o-te-rangi Sovereign Land Council; and (2) complies with the resolutions of the Poho-o-te-rangi Sovereign Land Council (a) made 16 January 2025 (the rates resolution) and (b) made 17 April 2025 (the tax resolution). 22 April 2025: Tax resolution served
Council's tax resolution was served on King Charles III and Prime Minister Hon. Christopher Luxon. The British Crown and its New Zealand colonial government have 30 days to respond to the tax resolution. To read the Notice of Resolution click here.
17 April 2025: Tax resolution carried
The Council has passed the tax resolution declaring, amongst other things, that the British Crown's New Zealand colonial government has no constitutional power to enact provisions in Pākehā tax law that breach the limitations of kāwanatanga, and, or, encroaches te tino rangatiratanga, and (1) ordered that the trustees of the Mo Koia Land Trust (the owners of Pohooterangi A9B Block) be released from their tax obligations; and (2) ordered the Prime Minister to cause amendment to Pākehā tax law necessary to exempt owners of Māori freehold land from mandatory compliance with obligations imposed on them under Pākehā tax law. 2 February 2025: Mayor informed rates won't be paid
The Mo Koia Land Trust writes to the Mayor of Gisborne advising that rates in respect of the Pohooterangi A9B Block will not be paid unless the free prior and informed consent of the trustees has first been duly given. The Trust invites the Mayor to provide a written request to the trustees asking for their consent to pay rates voluntarily. To read the Trust's letter click here.
18 January 2025: Rates resolution served

12 January 2025: Rates resolution carried
The Council has passed the rates resolution declaring, amongst other things; (1) that the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 is unconstitutional and invalid; and (2) the trustees of the Mo Koia Land Trust (the owners of Pohooterangi A9B Block) are not obligated to pay rates without their free, prior, and informed consent. The resolution goes further and orders the Prime Minister (1) to make certain announcements to the House of Representatives; and (2) to cause amendment of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 to effectively outlaw the rating of Māori freehold land; and (3) to cause the payment of compensation to Pohooterangi land block owners. 8 January 2025: Interim Rules of procedure made

1 January 2025: Poho-o-te-rangi Sovereign Land Council established
